Webscraping for the social sciences
Learn how to acquire data from the web!
09.04.2019 kl. 12.30 - 10.04.2019 kl. 15.30
This workshop series is meant to introduce webscraping: how to get data from the web. The series will both cover different types of scraping (using API’s, getting raw website data, getting data from social media platforms) as well as teach how to do it in either R or python.
About the workshop
In this two day workshop, you will be introduced to various tools for working with data from the web.
Day 1 will consist of a general introduction to working with data from the web as well as introducing a range of tools from the Digital Methods Initiative (and others) that can ease the process of collecting web data. Day 1 will also introduce working with API’s.
Day 2 will dive into more complex issues of web scraping and introduce how to extract information from HTML and how to collect data from several sites (using spiders).
Coding examples in python will be used. You can either write your own code during the workshop or follow along in an interactive Jupyter Notebook (thus not requiring prior knowledge of working with python).
Note that while the coding examples are in python, the coding is very similar in R.
