The dean’s office of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities has in 2022 devoted a strategic funding pool containing 100.000 DKK for launching new research projects within digital social science and humanities. The dean’s office wishes with this call to receive applications containing concrete suggestions for pilot projects using digital data and methods. A maximum of three pilot projects will receive funding from the strategic funding pool.

Purpose

The purpose of the strategic funding pool is first and foremost to initiate research activities that make use of digital data and methods. Digital analytical methods (including machine learning, data from the internet / ’Big Data’, digital text analysis methods etc.) are expanding the knowledge boundaries within SSH research and are providing new possibilities.

The aim of the strategic funding pool is to provide researchers in the field of social science and humanities with the opportunity to try out and test concrete project ideas that uses digital data and methods – regardless of whether you are already working within the field or not. The intention with the strategic funding pool is to sup-port the work involved in testing these new methods and new sources of data. It is possible to apply for funding for research assistants, student helpers, external consultants, travel activity, software licenses, data access etc. It is encouraged to involve the digital data and methods laboratory, CALDISS, in the pilot project (it is not nec-essary to apply for funding covering CALDISS involvement).

Who can apply?

The strategic funding pool for supporting digital pilot research projects can be applied for by department heads in collaboration with researchers employed at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Application

The head of department compiles in cooperation with relevant researchers an application of max. two pages. The application must include a description of the purpose of the activity and list the members of staff involved in the project. In addition, the application must include a time schedule, a budget and a clear description of the activity or activities that are being applied for. Moreover, the application should include the insights, further activities etc. the pilot project is expected to lead to, as well as a description of how the suggested approach in the pilot project differs from current research practice. The pilot project should preferably launch as soon as possible and must be concluded at the end of June 2023 at the latest.

Deadline for application

The deadline for application is 31st of August 2022. The dean’s office makes the final decisions about grants from the strategic funding pool.

Applications are sent to the faculty by Signe Birgit Sørensen, sbso@adm.aau.dk.

Reporting to the faculty

When the planned activities are concluded, a written report is compiled to the faculty of max. one page detailing the activities completed, the experiences gained as well as whether and how the researchers involved intend to continue the project. As part of the reporting it is encouraged that the researchers involved give a presentation on the experiences gained from the pilot project. The report is sent to the faculty within two months of the com-pletion of the activity.

Use of CALDISS in the pilot project

It is encouraged to involve the digital data and methods laboratory, CALDISS, in the pilot project. It is not nec-essary to apply for funding covering CALDISS involvement. If CALDISS is to be involved, the project will prefer-ably be run like a “bridging project”. Read more about “bridging projects” here: en.caldiss.aau.dk/services/col-laborate/.
